In 2015, the International Institute for Sustainability (IIS) became partner of the Golden Lion Tamarin Association (AMLD) to develop projects related to the conservation of the Atlantic Rainforest, in Casimiro de Abreu/RJ. The city is the natural habitat of the golden lion tamarin, an endangered specie.
The projects focus on forestry monitoring and experiments with native species of Atlantic Rainforest, with the support of biochar, which it improves the soil conditions and may contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions.
The IIS-AMLD partnership will develop the following projects:
• Use of biochar in native plants species to enhance reforestation;
• Previous reforestation monitoring and its impacts on ecosystem services.
Recent studies indicate the use of biochar as an economic and environmentally sustainable tool, due to the potential to increase the productivity of crops and mitigate global environmental problems through carbon sequestration. This soil quality improvement is an optimistic alternative to the forest restoration process.
Status: ongoing.
